Roosevelt, March 1, 2019: Arrest for Assault on a Police Officer

First Squad detectives report the arrest of a West Hempstead man for an incident that occurred on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 3:00 A.M. in Roosevelt. 

According to detectives, Police Officers observed a Ford Explore violate Vehicle and Traffic Laws while traveling on Brookside Avenue and proceeded to pull the vehicle over on West Pennywood Avenue. As officers approached the car, the driver, defendant, initially ignored officer's commands to show his hands and began reaching towards the center console where they observed numerous glassine envelopes. After being asked to exit his vehicle, defendant put the car into drive and dragged an officer who reached into the car in an attempt to place the vehicle into park. After freeing himself from the partially closed window, the injured officer then got back into his police vehicle and followed defendant onto Uniondale Avenue in vicinity of Park Avenue where defendant crashed into two parked vehicles and flipped his car. After removing defendant from his vehicle he was placed under arrest and transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries he sustained as a result of the crash. The officer who was dragged also suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries. 

Glassine envelopes containing heroine were recovered from defendant's vehicle. 

Defendant is charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, and numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations.
