PBA TOP COPS: July 2016

SEVENTH PRECINCT
Police Officers
Christopher Ferraro
Christian Holland

On July 9th, 2016 at approximately 0500 hours, while assigned to RMP 701, Officers Ferraro and Holland received a radio assignment for a suspicious person at Riverside Dr. and Bellaire St. in Wantagh. Upon arrival at scene they were met by a witness, who gave them a description of a male who was seen exiting a rear yard at that location carrying electronics. Starting an immediate canvas the officers observed a green minivan being operated by a female along with a male passenger, who matched the description of the witness. The Officer radioed for back-up and conducted a VTL stop. As back-up arrived Officer Ferraro ordered the male out of the vehicle after observing a bulge protruding from his sweatshirt. The male exited the van and ran from the scene; both officers pursued the subject on foot. In a desperate attempt to evade the police the male subject jumped into a canal, but returned to shore after having trouble swimming. Both officers attempted to gain control of the subject, who continued to resist, causing the subject to once again enter the canal. After once again returning to shore the subject was placed into custody and walked back to his vehicle. The arrest caused officer Ferarro to suffer an injury to his shoulder and right knee.

During the officers investigation a loaded .38 caliber revolver was recovered at the scene, along with several proceeds from a nearby house burglary. Further investigation revealed that these subjects had been responsible for several past burglaries and larcenies from autos in the Wantagh/Merrick area. Both subjects were charged with five counts of burglary, two counts of grand larceny, and criminal possession of a weapon, along with assault 2.
