Patrolman Kennedy was shot on July 27, 1928, while on patrol in Woodmere, N.Y. He lived in constant pain and went through thirteen operations in various hospitals until his death on July 12, 1932. He was 28 years old. His assailant, Al Brengard, was electrocuted in Sing Sing and an accomplice, William French, was sentenced to life in Clinton Prison Dannemora. Patrolman Kennedy awarded the Sykes Medal for Valor posthumously on September 10, 1934.
