Patrolman West was assigned to the Highway Patrol Bureau working the 0800 to 1600 tour of duty February 4, 1946, operating Ghost Patrol Car # 81. He was shot twice by a VTL violator, with his own gun, as the subject was being transported in the patrol car to the second precinct house. Denville Edmond Dotson, age twenty-four, an ex-convict was apprehended and convicted of the crime and was sent to Sing Sing for forty-five years to life. Patrolman West was cited for Excellent Police Work on September 8, 1942. He was 48 years old.
